Bash

Two Months Later

Every day with Mila is better than the last. I’ve spent every night with her in my arms at the White House. We’ve caused scandal after scandal everywhere we go. The press has been on us since day two. Day two is also when I was reassigned to the Vice-President’s detail. I wouldn’t have been able to objectively protect Mila, so I requested a transfer. It’s for the best, really. She also requested an all-female detail, thankfully.

My new asset, David Harvey, is the first unmarried vice-president since 1929, but that guy was a widower. Dave, as he insists on being referred to, has never been married nor does he have any prospects. He’s a great guy and an even better VP.

Today is the day that I ask Mila to be my wife. I tried to wait, to not rush it, but I can’t take it anymore. I’ve been dropping hints since the very beginning, but now I need the entire world to know she’s mine. I want all those frat guys to know what’s what when she is at school.

I carved out some time with Glenn, Mila’s father, to ask him for his blessing for Mila. It doesn’t matter to me, but I’d do anything for her. I’m taking him to grab a beer at the Capitol Pub over on Capitol Street. I’ve already gotten a table and a beer. He’s a few minutes late, but I know he’s a busy man. I stand when I see him approaching the table. His detail hangs back at a nearby table, giving us some space because they know I can protect him too.

“Hey man, sorry I’m late. The traffic in the circle was terrible,” he says shaking my hand. It’s still kind of weird that he’s only about four years older than me, but you get used to it. It’s not his fault he fell in love young.

“I hear you.” He sits down and orders a beer when the waitress comes over.

“So, what did you need to talk to me about? My assistant said it was important,” he says as soon as the waitress walks away.

“It is. I’m just going to get right to it. I love your daughter and I’m going to marry her.” I know that I sound like an asshole, but I don’t care. I have never wanted anything more and I’ll do anything to ensure I get what I want.

“So, this is just a courtesy or something?” he says chuckling.

“It would mean a lot to Mila to have your blessing. She’s mine either way, but ya know how it is,” I say.

“I do know how it is, just look at me and my wife,” he says taking a long pull from the beer that was dropped off by a different waitress. I use the opportunity to do the same. “Though, that’s not something a father wants to hear,” he concludes.

“I get that. I just assumed you knew this was heading in this direction since I’m practically living in the White House.
